Imperial College Surgical Society is proud to announce our second Global Health & the Surgeon Conference (GH&S), a national and pan-disciplinary event. The GH&S ethos is to inspire the next generation of medical thinkers and global pioneers and expose them to the frontiers and potential of global medicine, Imperial College London itself being a 'melting pot' of medical, public health, engineering and basic science disciplines.
This event is aimed at bringing together students from various interdisciplinary fields in order to expose students to the realities of the global burden of disease and the role of surgery in the humanitarian response. The conference also serves to encourage students to begin thinking about ways in which they can contribute towards improving the delivery of healthcare and encourage opportunities for surgically orientated elective and summer placements.
Imperial College London itself has more than 2000 medical students, which translates to 2000 pairs of eyes able to spot problems or improvements needed in hospitals, patient care and research environments. However, they might not have the engineering, computing, design, technological, business or other skills that are necessary to create a solution to that clinical problem. GH&S aims to foster a culture of always seeking to improve on the status quo by interdisciplinary collaborations, where students and professionals from various disciplines bring their skills and expertise to the table to solve a common problem.
By instilling a sense of wonder, we hope to motivate students into realising their vision for the future of global health and surgery. We hope you have an enjoyable day at the conference and an enjoyable weekend in London.
